Who I am

I’m Alice Child.
I am a qualified psychodynamic psychotherapist, with a Postgraduate Diploma (Distinction) in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy from the University of Brighton. This diploma is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
I also have a degree in Psychology, and before training as a therapist, I worked in secure settings and the legal profession. Therefore I have specific experience in understanding the pressures and traumatic issues faced by people with experience of the justice system, whatever form that might take.
What will I be like?
I am kind, empathetic, and compassionate – and importantly – curious about you and what makes you, you.
I’m patient – we’ll go at your pace and I’ll respect your right to decide what to talk about and when.
I’ll be supportive throughout your counselling journey – I know it’s not always easy to explore the things which have led you to where you are today, so I’ll be alongside you as we travel through your experiences.
I’ll be honest and real with you, and you may find that I offer you ideas which others in your life haven’t before. Coming to therapy is not like talking to friends, family, or colleagues; I won’t give you advice or tell you what to do, I won’t be judgemental, and I don’t have my own agenda. Instead, I will provide a different perspective which can help you untangle and reframe your feelings and experiences.

Professional Information
I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, the membership body whose Ethical Framework and Professional Conduct Procedure I fully adhere to. I am also fully insured.
I have regular one to one supervision with a senior, experienced colleague with whom my client work is discussed. Continuing my professional development is very important to me, and I deepen and update my knowledge regularly.
My training required me to have my own weekly therapy, so I really understand what it is like to be a client in the other chair.
My Therapeutic Approach
I have been trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy. This means I’m interested in your previous experiences, particularly from childhood, and how they impact you now. Early experiences can create patterns which you may not be aware of, which shape the way you move through the world, including your relationship to yourself and others.
By listening carefully to you and working with you to explore your experiences, as well as noticing the relationship between us, we can increase your awareness of the coping mechanisms or patterns you might be repeating which have built up over time to protect you from painful feelings, which may no longer be serving you.
This increased insight can help you make changes in how you think, behave and relate, allowing you to fundamentally redefine how you feel about yourself and your relationships with others. You may be able to function in new ways, empowered to experience life differently and freed from the difficult and painful situation you may be in or which has affected you from your past.
Therapy can be extremely powerful – it can help us understand ourselves better and work through our problems and past experiences. It is a process where I listen deeply to you, and think carefully with you. It provides time and space for us to examine and understand your story, helping you to make changes to lead a more fulfilling life. It is not always an easy or comfortable experience but I will support you throughout.
